Hide Android status bar background using AppCompat

I can't seem to hide the status bar using AppCompat. Here's my style.xml

    <item name="colorPrimary">@color/primary</item>

    <item name="colorAccent">@color/accent</item>

    <item name="windowNoTitle">true</item>
    <item name="windowActionBar">false</item>
    <item name="android:windowFullscreen">true</item>
    <item name="android:windowContentOverlay">@null</item>
  </style>
</resources>

This hides action bar and also hides status bar text but does not hide status bar background. Any idea how to get rid of it?

I'm using this theme at application level by editing the manifest file.
